I am a big fan of Sharla Cheung, the Hong Kong actress also known as Cheung Man or 張敏, who was famous for having one of the highest work rates (or movie output over time) in the 80s and 90s. She was, and is still, one of the most gorgeous actresses to grace the HK screen – instantly distinctive with her beautiful face and stunning figure – although I think it’s also safe to say that she has really wonderful and piercing eyes that express and add so much character.
This fabulous lady retired to concentrate on the usual family, business etc. before suddenly re-emerging again in the early 2000s to return to what is known as the ‘entertainment circle’.
In contrast to starring in big budget comedy films (such as co-starring with Stephen Chow and Jet Li in many great classic films of the 90s: Hail the Judge, Fight Back to School, Royal Tramp, God of Gamblers) her recent repetoire is much more art-house and low-key, in addition to appearances and leading roles for the small screen TV series – particularly in China – which isn’t too surprising, given that she originally hailed from Shanghai, the CBD of China.
In a way, it was rather unfortunate that her hey-day preceded the explosion of the internet, because otherwise the WWW would be drowned in fan dedications to this actress. But in a way, it does mean that a small, niche fan site like this might be allowed to grow and mature at it’s own pace.
I am sure there are many, many Sharla Cheung fans, and hopefully this dedicated English fan site can become a hub or at least a resource for those wanting to learn more about the work (and occasionally, life) of this amazing actress.
